“I got everything I wanted, unfortunately I wanted all the wrong things.”
-Eva Longoria’s character from Desperate Housewives
Imagine graduating from Yale, becoming a defense attorney at a prestigious law firm, getting married, having a couple of kids… and one day looking in the mirror, feeling like you just can’t go on. Why does it seem that until we hit the lowest of lows, we don’t stop along the way to check in on the life we are creating? Why does it take complete misery before we will make a change?
I believe two of the reasons comes down to expectation and comparison. Let’s take expectation first. If you have read my blogs, this will be familiar: “You are in the relationship you feel you deserve, and you make the amount of money you feel you are worth.” So what is your expectation for your life? Right now in this exact moment, your current life circumstances are a direct reflection of that belief.
Now let’s look at comparison. If you have ever said the line, “Well it could be worse…” then you are the person I am speaking to. If we compare our circumstances to the lowest common denominator, it’s no wonder we stay stuck, because it’s not that bad. But what If you compared things to how great they could be? If you believed happiness, fulfillment, and a true life of meaning was possible, would you settle for less?
This is the topic of today’s conversation on The Game Changer Podcast. Caroline Greene, my guest, walked away from being an attorney (a field nearly every member of her family is in) to become a life and business coach. She now helps women find their own meaning for their lives, before hitting rock bottom. Stop and think right now if there is any area of your life in which you are settling. Then ask yourself why. Changing that belief, will change the trajectory of your life. I hope today’s conversation is a spring board into creating a life you truly are fired up about. Believe me when I say, it actually is possible.
