“How do I find my purpose in life?” That is probably one of the most common questions I hear. My answer to that is to have you ponder something. (We’ll get to that in a moment.) What I find super interesting is how many people take personality quizzes to find their best vocation, or write down all of their learned skills and try to match that to the most logical job description. I can assure you that’s not my approach.
Everything happens for a reason.
If you don’t subscribe to that philosophy, let me save you some time and you can stop reading now. My belief in what you are meant to do with your life, at the highest level, has everything to do with what has taken place in your life. Stop and ask yourself why those things happened. The reality is, no one else has those exact experiences, and no one else has your particular view on them but you. What are you doing with those experiences that can help another person, because of what you went through, rather than in spite of it? So if you are trying to find your purpose in life, what I want you to contemplate is “What are the most significant events that have taken place over the course of your life, and how can those experiences benefit someone else?”
Maybe you didn’t fit in when you were in school so you played guitar in your room most of the time. Are you inspiring people through music now? Are you teaching music to kids who might be going through what you went through? Imagine giving a child an artistic outlet so they don’t feel the need to escape through drugs and alcohol.
My guest today, Evan “Bullet” James is doing just that. Evan almost died a cocaine addict’s death in a gas station bathroom, which was his final breaking point after years on drugs and being homeless. He now is the star of A & E’s television series The Extractors where he and his team locate, intervene, and extract young men and women in similar situations to what his was many years ago.
Maybe your story isn’t that extreme. But I can tell you… someone, if not thousands of people, can benefit because of your experiences and who you are. I hope this episode inspires you to share your story. Imagine how you significantly you can impact someone else’s life, right now. And for those of you who are, thank you for telling your story and shining your light for others. If it’s time to crank up your light, please let me know, I would love to help you get your story out!
