Nothing changes in our external world, without first changing our internal world.
I have made that statement more times than I can count. What is really amazing is the widely varying conversations I have had with people from all walks of life (and near death) that agree with that sentiment as much as I do.
However, regarding this philosophy, I think today’s conversation with Noah Levine is probably the most surprising out of all of the interviews I have done. Noah was first arrested at age eleven. He was in and out of juvenile hall until he was 18, three of those times for felonies. If you are looking at his picture on my website, it would be easy to judge a book by its cover, and think that likely nothing in his life has changed.
However that couldn’t be more wrong. In fact, not only did he turn things around, but he has dedicated his life to ensuring that other kids avoid some of his mistakes through his teachings of mindfulness and meditation. Noah believes that until you take full responsibility for your actions and where you are in life, nothing will change. For him and many others with a troubled past, this way of living—responsibly and mindfully— has come through meditation, not fighting pain, nor becoming addicted to pleasure.
Whether or not someone you know is struggling with an addiction, I believe you will find this conversation insightful and thought provoking. Further, I think it will shed more light on how a meditation practice (if you don’t already have one) can be incredibly helpful in every situation; from being incarcerated, to being the CEO of a company. Every one of us can benefit with a little more time with no interruption, noise, or persuasion from the outside world. Before you rush off to the next thing, maybe now is a good time to start.
With mindful gratitude,
